Hot Creek:

Conditions:Good

Report: Due to the flows dropping, bird predation has once again become a problem. The result is that the fish will be out in the feeding lanes during the stronger hatches but once they are over they will move back to cover. When that happens you need to fish tight to the banks/ weeds or swing streamers under the banks or weed beds.
Trico and Caddis hatches are still decent and the fishing is good but the BWO hatches are just getting started so the 11-1 action is picking up. At the Interpretive Site the morning hatches, especially the Trico hatches are still good but even though the crowds have thinned they’re still there and the fish are getting super picky so you better get your drifts right. If you’re not seeing hatches don’t forget the scuds.
Down in the canyon the hatches are still good, especially the Trico’s, starting around 9:30 along with the caddis migration. 10:30 the Trico spinner fall begins. The beginnings of the BWO hatches start around 11. The only slow time seems to be early afternoon but 3-dark is caddis emergence with the male Tricos hatching the last couple of hours of light. Also the scud population is growing and at this time of the year the fish will actually start grabbing the weeds and shaking them to knock the scuds loose.
Two guide tips: 1) When casting, if you’re looking at the weed beds, you will hit them, so look at the clear lanes. 2) Your drifts should be 4 seconds or less followed by a smooth but aggressive backcast - You will be amazed by the number of hookups you didn’t even know were there.

Upper Owens:

Conditions: Good

Upper Owens River Flows Click Here:

Report:Good news, the cattle are back to the Owens Valley for the winter! The flows coming out of Grant Lake have come back up to 54 cfs. The water temperatures are dropping, now upper 50’s low 60’s by midday, usually the fish turn on when it hits 58. The hatches have slowed down, besides the ever present midges the morning caddis and Trico hatches are fading but still have their strong days and the BWO’s are starting to show midday. We are starting to see the bigger lake Rainbows and Browns start moving up, this usually starts in October and it seems they are on the way up. If size is not important you can always count on the 6"-8" browns and rainbowsto be eating small dry flies. We are also seeing the stockers moving upstream from below the bridge, they are spread throughout half of the water above the bridge. With the increase in water above the confluences hopefully the fish are less spooky. Below the bridge is probably a better bet, the visibility is less and there’s deeper holes that fish can hide in.

Lower Owens:

Conditions: Improving

Lower Owens River Flows Click Here:

Report:Despite the hatches being inconsistent the fishing is picking up.There are still Tricos coming off in the morning, some days fairly strong . There are some midmorning caddis hatches followed by PMD’s midday with a few Baetis starting to show up. The problem is the fish don’t seem to be keying on much of anything, leading to the dreaded “one fish per pattern” curse. Other than that the fishing has been better up towards the campground but the fishing does seem to be picking up lower down. Also seeing lots of fish eating midge and Blackfly larva.

East Walker River:

Conditions: Very low water, fish elsewhere.

East Walker River Flows Click Here:

Report: Not much to report here, the river was briefly at ~80 CFS this week before plummeting back down to ~22 CFS. We strongly recommend not fishing the river at these flows, as fish are trapped in the deeper holes waiting for higher flows. Not very sporting to shoot fish in a barrel.

Conditions: Lake is clear and cold.

Report: Fish Camp is closed for the season as of last weekend. Float tubing and shore fishing is still allowed until November 15th though. Water is cold, so not much midge activity. Stripping baitfish and leech patterns on a slow sink line is the way to go now.
